Post bands/musicians from your hometown

In the early 2000s Springfield was to metal what Disney was to teen pop stars. Within the span of just a few years Springfield area artists Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, All That Remains, and Staind (more alt rock/nu metal, but there’s no denying their first album was pretty metal) all hit the big time.

Outside of metal there’s also blues legend Taj Mahal

And instrumental solo guitarist Tony MacAlpine

Let’s hear the music of your people

I was with you until Staind.

Fall Of Troy is local. Most people know FCPREMIX from guitar hero but Chapters 1-5 are pretty cool too.

Forget everything you’ve heard from Staind in the past 15 years, listen to Mudshovel again. You’ll feel better (it works for me anyways)

That seems to be the correct listening method for a fair number of early 2000's metal bands, for better or worse

Only slightly related, but remember As I Lay Dying? I was wondering what ever happened to them since they were pretty huge and then disappeared and then I remembered something about the singer being imprisoned..?

Yep. Trying to hire an assassin (undercover cop) to kill his wife. Huh

I still have a documentary/behind the scenes DVD special on the band. It’s quite good. Wierd to see a super religious high-school football star with tons of scouting interest then go on to start a metal band, gain renown, start another band that worships Arnold Schwarzenegger, and finally plot the murder of his supermodel wife.

While some of the biggest names in music (James Taylor & Carly Simon, among others) have chosen to make the Vineyard their home, the only band from here I know of that’s ever had any sort of success is Dukes County Love Affair (DCLA). Most of their music can be described as grunge blues/rock/rap.

ETA: There’s also a group called Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish. They tour all over the country but stick mostly to the Island and Boston. Johnny Hoy is actually playing the Harmonica in that first DCLA song above.

Bing Crosby? Tacoma can claim him too but his family moved here when he was 3. Ryan Lewis too but Bing sold a shit-ton more records.

These guys were my favorite Charlotte band for a while. They played sxsw in 2012.

One of their guitarists is now Fantasia’s touring guitarist:

She’s also from Charlotte although I’m not into her style of music.

Also, Firehouse - a mediocre hair band with one hit in 1990

And then there’s Jodeci / K-Ci and JoJo

AntiSeen:

Wednesday 13 - AKA Joe Poole - from Murderdolls:

but before that he fronted Frankenstein Drag Queens:

Spite: excellent late 90s metal until their guitarist died of an OD out in Texas.

Obey Bizar:

the singer for five times down was a neighbor of a friend. Now he’s a carpenter.

most of this is stuff from my late teens and early 20s.

This guy lived with me rent free for like six months in 2007 while he “got on his feet...” I have no hard feelings for him, even though he was kind of a mooch at the time:
